Devlog#10 Building Bricks to Success
Hi, Minnie here again,
I'm going to tell you all about my process for developing the environment. Initially, I'd never made a full map on my own, and admittedly, my first iteration was a horrid mess of non-manifold geometry and thousands of faces that were most certainly not necessary for the structures. I'm including this to show you all how much this project has taught me.

After discussing this initial model, one of my teammates, Bingus, showed me the best way to optimise the models for our game. That is, to make modular sets of walls, floors (with faces separated for later coding magic), and roofs and fixtures (poles, window frames, doors, etc.)

The next step was organising and colouring. It took a while to organise my outliner and rename each item within the maya project; they all needed to be organised specifically for ease of access within Unity. I asked Vague-carrier to help me make a general colour palette, which I then expanded to a big grid of all the colours needed for a universal .jpeg file. Then, I assigned that file as a material to each mesh. Finally, I UV-unwrapped each part of the building and each furniture item into its matching colour square. This method helped keep the colour scheme for the map and all its meshes cohesive and bright.
Finally, I exported the building and all its fixtures as a single .fbx file. As previously mentioned, the names for each mesh were organised and grouped exactly for this step. When I exported the building, Unity understood that there were lots of little separate models as a part of the larger file. The separate models can then be moved and scaled either individually or equally as a part of a larger mesh.
